Biodiversity Stratford

ONE GARDEN AT A TIME

WHY

Biodiversity is essential for a healthy ecosystem, however most of our natural areas have been transformed for human use. Farmland, industry and commerce make up much of this, however our own homes are sitting on land which makes up a large percentage of land which was once a fully functioning ecosystem. Making use of this space has the potential to increase habitat for local species and can have a significant impact.

Currently most homeowners favor lawns for a large part of the available space. Gardens consist of alien plants which admired for their beauty, as well as the fact that they’re not eaten by insects. Unfortunatley, this indicates that they don’t meet the needs of our local insects, birds and other wildlife which have coevolved with local native plants for thousands of years.

By providing native plants, we can support our local birds and insects. With each native plant added, we’re offering immediate support to our local ecosystem.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Whether you have acres of land at your disposal, or a small balcony, you can give back to nature.

Each indigenous native plant that you add will e’re a group of people from the Stratford area who are concerned about habitat and biodiversity loss. We believe that there’s huge potential in home gardens to conserve and restore local biodiversity by putting native plants back where they belong. We’re working to create a local network which will enable the sharing of resources, native plant seeds and seedlings.

HOW TO DO IT

Biodiversity is essential for a healthy ecosystem, however it is declining at an alarming rate. Conversion of natural areas for human use inevitably leads to habitat loss, so making use of existing green spaces is crucial.  This is where we can have a significant impact.

Lawns, and even most home gardens, don’t meet the needs of our local insects, birds and other wildlife which have coevolved with local native plants for thousands of years.

By providing these plants, we can support our local birds and insects. With each native plant added, we’re offering immediate support to our local ecosystem.
